In addition to the traditional three powers, there is a fourth power in the state - the armed power, whose purpose is to protect and defend the state. In order to have the most loyal and effective military forces possible, democracies limit the political rights of soldiers and form a professional attitude to serve the state, not political power or authority. This is one of the most important conditions for the effectiveness of the officer corps. The stronger it is, the safer the state. Interwar Lithuania was not always democratic, but in all periods it had to solve the same question - how to control military power? National renaissance figures who became officers, volunteers who fought for freedom, determined aviation officers and generals were figures of strong character and often considerable intelligence. They did not tire of expressing their political interests, participated in the activities of political parties and parliamentary elections, hatched conspiracies and coups, as if an invisible force influenced the state's foreign policy both before and after the 1926 coup.
