For the public, the KGB was a criminal organization, as were the individuals who worked in it or secretly collaborated with it. Belonging to the highest nomenclature (although this was not always the case), the status of one of the most important pillars of the occupation regime in occupied Lithuania made the KGB an exceptional institution. It was granted exceptional power, even higher than the law. However, the KGB also had to obey nomenclatural and bureaucratic rules and traditions. Exclusivity and special party-determined tasks (it was not for nothing that the Chekists were treated as political party soldiers) formed a certain Chekist identity, which was characterized by a unique system of values, traditions and behavior that influenced operational activities and relations with the outside world. KGB cadres are undeservedly in the shadow of agents, although it was they who implemented repressive policies, persecuted and interrogated people, recruited agents and formed tasks for them. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to analyze which individuals worked as operational employees of the KGB of the LSSR in the 1950s–1980s, what their ethnic composition, education, and professional training were. It also presents biographies of the heads of the most important KGB departments, and how and which people became employees of Soviet security.
