One may ask why Litynski undertook to write a study on the PSL? The opposition youth environment, to which he belonged, conducted a self-education seminar in 1974-75, during which they analyzed ideological and political projects of the first post-war years, alternative to the PPR, before the PPR gained a total monopoly on power. At that time, they were looking for attractive models of thinking about ideas, a democratic, pluralistic Poland, respecting the rights of citizens. The single-party dictatorship in the Polish People's Republic was a negative model, and the discussions were accompanied by questions: how did this happen, did the opponents have a chance to win, what kind of policy should they have pursued? Arguments were sought in the post-war press, and they also talked to participants in the political life of those years. Lityński became the top student of this seminar, because he was the only one who was able to move from participating in the discussion to writing an extensive and mature study on the subject. It was published in an issue of "Krytyka" edited in 1981 and printed during martial law. At that time, the author was in an internment camp and later imprisoned.
