The dissertation is the first attempt at such an exhaustive presentation of the attitudes of a selected group of leading Polish archaeologists from the years 1939–1956 towards Nazi and Stalinist totalitarianism. As the author notes – Poland and its citizens experienced the horror of both Nazism and communism. Important is not only the reconstruction of the history of the discipline studied in this period, but also the comparative approach, presenting the perception of the ideologies ruling both in Berlin and Moscow by Polish archaeologists.
