The first mention of Poles in Chicago dates back to the 1830s. The intensification of Polish settlement in this city took place after 1850, and since then there have been several waves of Polish emigration to the United States. Today, approximately 800,000 people of Polish descent live in the Chicago metropolitan area. This huge, diverse Polish diaspora has been the object of research and scientific studies for many decades - and still arouses keen interest of historians of various specialties, sociologists, and social anthropologists. The articles and sketches collected in the volume do not constitute a synthesis of Polish fates in Chicago. However, selected fragments of reality say a lot about the complexity of the experiences of people of Polish descent in subsequent periods of the city's development. They show the social fabric of Polonia - past and present - and the dynamics of its changes.
