Pitirim A. Sorokin (1889-1968), one of the leading sociologists of the XX century, was a prolific writer with impressively rich variety of ideas. To a large extent this richness had its source in the sociologist’s personal life which was full of dramatic and sometimes tragic events. All those twists and turns reflected on the development of his theoretical concepts. Early in his career he maintained positivistic principles in academic research, but later, in the American period of his life, changed his views in favor of religious interpretation of the reality, and replaced his early progressive and liberal political beliefs with conservative philosophy. This book discusses the relationship between the Sorokin’s theoretical principles and his personal life-experiences, with special emphasis on how his involvement in the events of the revolution and civil war in Russia had influenced his general sociological, philosophical, and political views.
