This is the first work in which the philosophy of the national idea is considered as an independent intellectual current that reaches far beyond political science - to questions about the essence and meaning of national existence. On a broad historical and cultural material, the author explores the place of this trend in the European - and, especially, Ukrainian - consciousness of modern times (XIX - early XX centuries.). A separate section is devoted to the national-existential search for Ivan Franko, in whose person the spiritual experience of the generation of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, which was crucial for the fate of national culture, is concentrated.
