Petrzalka [borough of Bratislava] is situated in the territory of three settlements on the right bank of the Danube. Once the largest village in Czechoslovakia, today it is one of the largest prefabricated housing estates in Central Europe. The author describes the history of Petrzalka from the beginnings of settlement, through the Roman period, the arrival of the Slavs and Pechenegs, the ethnic and settlement development within Hungary, the resistance of Budapest to hand over the territory to Czechoslovakia in 1918, the annexation by the German Empire, and the annexation of Petrzalka to Czechoslovakia. Among the historical sources he weaves the memories of old Petrzalka residents and illustrates them with period photographs of people, houses, streets, shops, manufactories, factories, playgrounds, the Lido swimming pool, park, cafes, shipyards, amusement parks, balls, barracks, and streets of total poverty.
