The XVIIIth century started with the reforms by Peter the Great and ended with those by Сatherine II (the Great). Peter I died having made no will. With the help of guardsmen Catherine Alexeevna took the throne. After her death the throne was inherited by Peter II. Three years later the self-willed and obstinate child died from smallpox. Then a dark decade came. The Supreme Secret Council called to the throne Anna Ioannovna, a niece of Peter the Great, followed by his daughter Elizaveta Petrovna. The last Peter’s successor was his grandson Peter III. Then the age of Catherine the Great started.
