The book is devoted to the time of the Russian poets and philosophers, who advocated the principles of high morality, real patriotism and devotion to the culture. The first part describes the epoch of the Great Revolution of 1917 and the Red terror; the second part deals with the events of the 1960-1970s, when the government was trying to restrain the free development of creative ideas. The main characters of the first part are Akhmatova, Gumilev, Mandelshtam, Pasternak, as well as the greatest Russian religious thinkers. The destiny of Iosif Brodskii, the Nobel Prize winner, is in the centre of the second part.
