The work of Boris Nikolaevich Ermolaev (1903–1982) is an ideal example of quiet but inspired art. In the 1920s and 1930s, he experienced the temptations of numerous “isms,” eventually coming to an understanding of the purpose of his work. In the late 1930s, Ermolaev first found himself in the experimental lithographic workshop of the Leningrad Union of Artists, where he worked side by side with other Leningrad artists on his first prints. In the post-war period, the workshop became a laboratory for his research, and stone became the main medium for his graphic and pictorial discoveries.
