Valerian Pidmohylnyi (1901-1937) is one of the most outstanding novelists of the Shot Renaissance era, translator, literary critic, linguist. Contributed to the entry of Ukrainian literature into the European cultural space.
In the intellectual and psychological prose of V. Podmohylyny, the loneliness and alienation of the main characters are caused by the unfreedom of man in an absurd world. Ostap Shaptala, the hero of the story of the same name, after the death of his sister, feels guilty before her and falls into a "borderline situation". The writer warns against illusions and the search for objects of worship, which can be not only people, but also ideas, things and images. The hero of "The Story Without a Name" is looking for a charming stranger in the city in order to understand the value of human existence anew. This work contains reflections on the purpose of art, and therefore partially reveals V. Podmohylny's aesthetic views.
