The trilogy "OST" by Ulas Samchuk (1905-1987) is the novels "Moroz's small village", "Darkness", "Escape from Self". The events of the novel "Moroz's small village" take place from Christmas 1918 to Easter 1919, in a difficult and disturbing period of Ukrainian history. The heroes of the book are looking for answers to the urgent questions of their time and "eternal" questions: about the revolution, Ukrainian statehood, language, culture, art. The small village here is a symbol of an established, traditional world. The destruction of the Ukrainian small village meant the destruction of the Ukrainian soul.
The events of the novel "Darkness" cover the period from the Civil War to the beginning of the Second World War. Darkness is everything terrible, tragic, dark that the Soviet government brought - war, famine, mass political processes, Gulag. Ivan Moroz is arrested as an "enemy of the people", he lives years of captivity, torture, and humiliation. And, although not broken physically and morally, he was forced to cooperate with the Soviet authorities.
