This book of documents highlights the history of the Orthodox Church in the Ottoman-governed Balkans during the 17th and the 18th century. It carries Bulgarian-language translations of 229 documents from the Ottoman Archives in Istanbul, accompanied by detailed historical comments. The documents shed light on the status and the powers of the Orthodox Church within the Ottoman government system and the complex relations between the Ottoman government, the Orthodox clergy and the Orthodox population. They also raise important questions about some of the largest Bulgarian and other Balkan monasteries and about the contradictions between Catholic and Orthodox Christians.
