In the second half of the 19th – early 20th century, the Orenburg province offered photographers ample opportunities for ethnographic photography. It is no coincidence that many of the professional photographers who worked in Orenburg during this period created their own collections of ethnographic types. In addition, Orenburg attracted scientists-travelers, ethnologists, ethnologists, geographers and many other researchers with its ethnocultural diversity, who actively used photographic equipment to record ethnographic images. Nowadays, this rich ethnographic material is scattered across the funds of various domestic and foreign museums and libraries and is inaccessible to a wide range of Orenburg residents interested in the history of their native land, its unique ethnocultural world. The album is intended to fill this gap to some extent by introducing its readers not only to ethnographic photography, but also to the biographies of the photographers themselves, whose work allows us to look into the historical past.
