The issue reveals the history of the ancient settlement of the Russian North located on the Mezen' River. The uniqueness of the village of Kizhma consists in its wooden architecture, namely, the Church of the Virgin Hodigitria, founded in 1763 and wooden houses of the XIXth and XXth centuries that both survived and preserved their original appearance. The author used archival material in order to describe each of the principal spheres of life of the Kizhma villagers.
