Kazakhstan. Semipalatinsk. Mid-eighties. Seventh-grader Arman Smagulov makes friends with Valera Markov, who moved from the village to his yard and began to study in his class. No one accepts the unusually honest and sincere newcomer: neither his classmates, nor the kids in the yard, both Russian and Kazakh. This friendship is especially disliked by Takhir, the leader of the local yard gang, and he does everything to destroy it. This is the story of a provincial town where the Irtysh flows and Siberian relict forests grow around. It is about the time when explosions at the Semipalatinsk test site took the future away from entire generations, but they tried to live, despite everything. This is the imprint of the era and society before the changes that came soon - when the friendship of peoples seemed tangible, but for some reason the Kazakhs were called by Russian names, when everyone was seemingly equal in endless lines, but someone could jump the line. "On the Other Side of the River" is a story about one courtyard in Semipalatinsk and about a man who wanted to live correctly, and not by cunning and force.
