For the first time in the historiography of Russian punitive policy of the XIX - XXth centuries an attempt of complex study of the history of political exile is made. The book describes exile since its foundation in 1826 and up to 1917. It covers the most turbulent period in Russian political history from the Decembrists Mutiny and up to the victory of the February revolution in Russia and complete amnesty for political exiled and prisoners. The dynamics of social, party, national, family, age composition of Olyokminsk exiled has been studied as well as policies of settling the exiled in the region and organization of police control. The author uses a new periodization in the history of Siberian political exile.
