This is one of the classical studies by Bogdan Filov (1883-1945), an archeologist, historian and politician who served as prime minister of Bulgaria. The book was published simultaneously in German and English (1919) and later in French (1922) and Bulgarian (1924). Scientists have described it as a work of cultural significance which made a fundamental contribution to the study of civilization. Filov studied archeology, museology and numismatics in Bonn, Paris and Rome. He set the beginning of systematic archeological excavations in Bulgaria.
