The end of the Cold War more than 30 years ago ended the most dangerous period in human history, removing the threat of nuclear war and catastrophe. Then the world powers made an important decision to reduce their nuclear potential. However, in 2022, the diplomatic achievements of world security were nullified by a full-scale Russian invasion of the territory of Ukraine. The Russian Federation announced an increased level of readiness of its nuclear forces. In response, the governments of the United States and Great Britain publicly threatened to react swiftly in the event of the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine or outside of Ukraine. The world is teetering on the threshold of a new atomic era. To understand all the possible consequences and prevent a global catastrophe, we must learn the lessons of the most dangerous period of the Cold War - the Caribbean crisis. Drawing on a number of Soviet archival sources, previously classified KGB documents, and White House memos, Serhii Plokhi lifts the veil on what happened 60 years ago and allows us to rethink today's events in order to avoid nuclear madness fatal to the entire world.
