The book presents autobiographical notes of the famous Vologda regional specialist and historian A. E. Mertsalov (1847-1906). The publication was prepared based on a manuscript preserved in a private collection. Mertsalov's "Notes" present not only everyday life, but also the existence of thought accompanying the most important events of the second half of the 19th century. The personal and everyday experience of a thinking contemporary, whose quiet voice sounds from the depths of Russia, is evidence of someone who lived through these events, observing the reaction of contemporaries, assessing what was happening with the eye of a historian, getting lost in expectations and anticipating the tragedy of Russian uncompromisingness.
