Nadezhda Durova (1783-1866) is a person of heroic biography and, in general, the first woman-officer in Russia. Her life was depicted in a number of works of both prerevolutionary Russian and Soviet literatures. Nadezda Durova was herself a gifted writer, whose creativeness was highly thought of by A.S.Pushkin and V.G.Belinsky. "Notes by an Unmarried Cavalrywoman" represents one more evidence of the authoress's gift.
