The memoirs by E.A.Nikolskii (1869-1938), written at the end of his life in California, cover more than 55 years of his active and saturated life in a complicated historical period. He spent his childhood in Finland, youth - in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow. Then he visited a great number of countries and cities, where the military and civil service sent him. The participant and witness of the historical events, he tries to find out the reasons for which the tsarist government lost the wars and the Great Russian State crashed.
