The study looks at the history of Bulgaria from the point of view of nostalgia. It lays special emphasis on the nostalgia for socialism (the period of totalitarian communist rule from 1944 to 1989), felt by many Bulgarians during the subsequent transition to democracy and a market economy, despite the general condemnation of the "socialist" (communist) system. The author Boncho Asenov, a longtime security service officer, attributes the nostalgia for socialism to the unsatisfactory economic and social conditions in the country during the post-1989 period. "My book turned out a little sad," he says. "The Bulgarian people have had many tragic reasons to feel nostalgic."
