The following collection includes materials from the international conference that took place on May 6-8, 2003 in Khabarovsk, Russia. The conference focused on the problems of creating and managing protected areas to preserve wild salmon and their habitat in the North Pacific. Conference participants discussed critical issues including the status of salmon protected areas, opportunities to create these areas, main obstacles to this non-traditional form of protected area and ways to address them, the potential to use the Russian Territory of Traditional Use to protect salmon, legal aspects of North American salmon protection, and opportunities to work with the Wild Salmon Center and other international organizations to support creation of salmon protected areas.
