For the first time the central monument of the Russian chronicle of the XVIIth c. is studied on the basis of comparative analysis of all its lists kept in St.Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Saratov and Stockholm. Two principal editions of the monuments, the texts of all known versions go back to, are discovered. The author examines the correlation of the text of New Chronicler and some close to it works about Smuta; studies the problem of the monuments sources. Special attention is paid to the question of the New Chronicler genre as a special kind of narration different from traditional chronicles.
