Megalithic monuments have been studied extensively because of their omnipresence in certain regions of the world and because of the exciting mystery of the ancient worship of large stones and rocks. Unlike them, rock-hewn shrines are a relatively new subject of research related to Eurasian antiquity. In Southeastern Europe, both rock-hewn shrines and megalithic structures have long been of interest to Bulgarian scientists but their study has flourished over the last 20 years. The ancient rituals which were performed in such places in Southeastern Europe possessed the characteristics of Orphic mysteries.
