For centuries, cities have been a breeding ground for a diverse urban/town culture that has flourished, forming our national heritage. However, the fruits of this local and regional culture have not become part of our “great history”. Even in cities where the creators, bearers and preservers of this culture were the Slovak elites, collective memory is fading. The reconstruction of the past is becoming increasingly complex and uncertain. Significant individuals and families who contributed to economic and cultural development are disappearing from memory. Monuments are dying out and their descendants are preserving less and less precious information about their ancestors, their families, and their dramatic destinies in the changing regimes of Central Europe from generation to generation. The diversity of authors here combines fiction, essay, journalistic and interview texts. Their authors are enlightened natives or people who lived in a given city and dedicated themselves to the care and preservation of collective memory, writers, historians, ethnographers and journalists. The book My City is an opportunity to record and remember everything that in the future will have to be laboriously uncovered by heavy and clumsy archaeologists.
