The work is about one of the little-studied pages of the modern history of Russia the Dagestan war of August-September 1999. On the basis of archive materials, memoirs, research literature, central and regional periodicals, the author analyzes various reasons for the emergence of the Islamist rebellion in Dagestan, Russia's policy in this republic in 1999. The greatest attention is paid to the reaction of broad strata of Russian society and the main political forces of the country to the Dagestan war.
