Mochalov Sergei Mikhailovich (1902-1957) was a graphic artist, illustrator and book designer, master of bookplates, printmaking, teacher. In 1922–1926 he studied at the VKHUTEIN in Leningrad with P.A. Shillingovsky. Member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. He studied woodcuts at the Experimental Workshop of the LOSSH since 1933. In 1927–1929 he taught woodcuts at the graphic workshop of the IZHSA. He worked in the children's literature department of the State Publishing House, illustrating historical stories for youth. During the Great Patriotic War he lived and worked in besieged Leningrad. He took part in the activities of the creative association “Combat Pencil” (1941–1945). Participant of exhibitions since 1927. Photographs of the late 19th – early 20th centuries from the personal archive of S. U. Stepanov are used in the book. On the back of the cover there are woodcuts by S. Mochalov "Volga. 1942-1943" and "Neva. 1941-1942" from the book of poems "Land of Heroes" by A. Yashin (1945).
