The album includes photographs and drawings made during the Complex Mordvinian Ethnographic Expedition organized in 1953 by the Institute of Ethnography at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR together with the Mordovian Research Institute of Language, Literature, History and Economics at the Council of Ministers of Mordovia. The expedition worked with the two main ethnic Mordovian groups - Moksha and Erzi, and with their smaller groupings.
