The present book is about unusual occurrences, which were interpreted as “miracles” and demonstrations of the divine will in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and medieval India. But for the people, living in Ancient times and in the Middle Ages those were not events, which happened once during the historical period examined. On the contrary, every person during his lifetime at least once came across prophecies, which came true or were just rare natural anomaly. The most impressing events became widely known. They were described in many religious and literary monuments. On the basis of those descriptions some special genres appeared, for example oneirocritics, poradoxography, special literature about methods of telling the fortune etc. All the genres were strongly connected with traditional folk wisdom, coming from long ago.
