The monograph is a special study devoted to the history of verbal and arithmetic schools opened in 1721 by V.N. Tatishchev at the state-owned factories of the Urals and in the city of Kungur, which became the first state educational institutions in the region, and schools for teaching literacy to children of peasants in the settlements attached to the factories. It reveals the role of Tatishchev in regulating the principles of their activities, the policy of the Berg Collegium, the Ural authorities regarding the social composition of students, provision of teaching aids and tools. Particular attention is paid to the role of mining schools in the modernization of the economy and culture of the Urals. They are compared with other types of primary schools in Russia - numeral, bishop's, garrison, admiralty.
