The memorial complex on the Assumption Hill was created in memory of the soldiers who fought for Vitebsk during the Great Patriotic War.
This is not the most numerous military cemetery in terms of the number of soldiers buried in it. 16 officers are buried here, three of whom are Heroes of the Soviet Union, and an honorary resident of Vitebsk, Minai Shmyrev. In total, there are 12 graves on the territory of the cemetery: 1 common and 11 single ones.
The first burials in the park were carried out at the end of June 1944, when the city was liberated. After some time, they were placed in one line. The monuments were made of wood and looked like pyramids. The fence was also wooden. Even later, the fence became metal, and in 1956, two concrete figures of soldiers with bent banners were installed on the sides of the complex, which were facing Dvina.
On the 60th anniversary of the Great Victory in 2005, it was decided to restore the monument. The fence has been updated: the posts in it are now made of red granite. As for the figures of the soldiers, they were also modified: they were made of bronze-colored polymer concrete. The pedestal is faced with red granite. They decided to turn the warriors to face the visitors.
The memorial complex belongs to the objects of historical and cultural heritage.
