The book is devoted to the controversial issue of the status of the Kiev Metropolis since 1686, when the diocese of the Patriarchate of Constantinople was transferred under the control of the Moscow Patriarchs. It examines the history of the trip of the Moscow messenger Nikita Alekseev and the hetman's representative Ivan Lisitsa to Adrianople and Constantinople in 1686, as well as the contents of the patriarchal letters they received authorizing the ordination of Kiev metropolitans in Moscow. A comparison of the synodal resolutions adopted at that time with similar ones relating to other dioceses made it possible to conclude that they are talking about the preservation of the jurisdiction of the Patriarchs of Constantinople over the Kiev Metropolis. These decisions were in the interests of the Zaporozhye hetman I. Samoilovich, who sought to strengthen his power and expand the influence of the Kiev ruler under his control over the entire metropolis, including its Polish-Lithuanian territories. The appendix contains the main documents underlying the study.
