The book tells about the fate of 56 residents of Karelia who died in the performance of international duty in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Many were posthumously awarded orders and medals of the USSR. Among them are ordinary soldiers, sergeants, officers and employees of the Soviet Army. Their names are on the slabs of the Black Tulip memorial, opened in the center of Petrozavodsk in 1993.
Documentary materials - letters, memoirs, award sheets - tell about the peaceful, pre-war life of the heroes of the book, how they served in the army and honorably fulfilled their military duty. The book contains a list of residents of the Republic of Karelia who have been awarded a medal in connection with the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
