Why do visual artists in today's society of excess collect and preserve various objects at all? What types of objects are they attracted to? Where do they find their material? What meaning do they attribute to it? How does it affect their media practices? The book tries to answer these questions. A series of eighteen interviews with various visual artists creates an image that is diverse in genres, representative and that also gives the potential reader something that he(she) is able to recognize and identify with. Each interview is complemented by an interpretation of the artist's work from the point of view of his(her) "collecting" activity and rich visual documentation, illustrating not only the work that applies the collecting principle, but also a behind-the-scenes look at the studios and private archives at the collected material as a "semi-finished product" in the raw condition.
