Among the most important Slovak politicians before the establishment of Czechoslovakia-Slovakia is undoubtedly Matus Dula. He served for a long time in the leadership of the Slovak National Party. However, his activities had a much broader scope, as he was also involved in the economic and cultural spheres for the benefit of the Slovak nation. As a lawyer he represented both Slovak and Romanian politicians in political trials. Matus Dula's political thinking and actions represent more than half a century of Slovak politics. The decisive period of his activity is connected with the existence of Slovaks in the Habsburg monarchy. After the end of electoral passivity (1884-1901), he significantly contributed to the participation of the Slovak National Party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections of 1901. It was also thanks to him that Slovak politics later achieved its best electoral results in Hungary in 1906. Under his leadership, in May 1918 a decisive non-public meeting of Slovak politicians was held in Martin, in September 1918 a meeting on the formation of the Slovak National Council was held in Budapest, and on 30 October 1918 an assembly in Martin adopted the Declaration of the Slovak Nation. The establishment of Czecho-Slovakia became the culmination of Slovak politics in Hungary and at the same time it also marked the peak of Matus Dula's political career.
