Vytautas Landsbergis (born 1932) is a Lithuanian statesman and public figure, politician, musicologist, art critic, and publicist. He was the leader of the Lithuanian independence movement Sajudis and the head of state after Lithuania gained independence from the USSR until 1992. “In the absence of a truly documented history of the events of Lithuania’s liberation from the USSR, we often read and rely on narratives. However, only the whole and with meaningful details conveys the atmosphere of the event, which is a fact no less significant than the surviving documents,” says the author of the book. Vytautas Landsbergis not only records historical events, but also shares personal experiences and insights into the political challenges of the time, international reactions and public moods.
