A unique publication where Dovlatov’s letters to Komi Pedagogical Institute student Svetlana Menshikova are published. In 1962-1963 the writer served in the army guarding a penal colony in the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (now the Komi Republic). The future famous writer saw a portrait of the athlete S. D. Menshikova in a local newspaper and began sending her letters in which he talked about soldier’s life, friends, favorite writers, shared his thoughts, wrote poetry to her and often accompanied the letters with funny drawings. In his letters, he often addressed Svetlana as “Lyalka,” and called Syktyvkar, where Svetlana lived and now lives, “Lyalka City.” The period described in the book became one of the decisive ones in Dovlatov’s work.
