This work, in a series of successive approaches, should lead us to the proper subject of our considerations, to the forgotten pages of Silesian pitaval, which will be the aforementioned, unfinished, long-lived, yet faded regional legend of a certain pair of rogues, whom collective memory has unhesitatingly included among the noble robbers and equalizers of the world. The prototypes for these heroes of crime were two men who lived less than one hundred and fifty years ago, right next to the great-grandfathers of the generation living today, on the same patch of land: Wincenty Eliasz (1828-1918) and Karol Pistulka (1830-1879), in legend simply Eliasz and Pistulka. Perhaps our analysis will also, to some extent, be an attempt to explain why these once very famous criminals, who for a short time became heroes of a real legend, have now been practically completely forgotten.
