The author of the book - Vilis Seleckis - views in comparison two periods in the development of the independent Latvia. First period under consideration - first 10 years of the First Republic, led by President Carl Ulmanis, and the period of time from 1991 up to 2001 - the independent years of nowadays Latvia. In his survey the author tends to find the answer to the urgent and not easy question - why the First Republic's economy developed progressively and dynamically while Latvia of the present days is in the permanent crisis?
