This guide is an invitation to explore Riga and its vicinity. For us and our guests, these sites tell the story of 20th century political events in Latvia; from the grandest of monuments to the most humble of signs, they help us to understand our history. The authors of this guide have tried to be as objective as possible, and they acknowledge that certain actions and interpretations of recent events can be perceived and explained differently. But places and events remain as fundamental documentary evidence, and the recording of these sites has been the main task of the authors.
