The book continues the encyclopedic multi-volume series Languages of the World, which is being prepared at the Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences. This is the second issue dedicated to the Semitic languages. The book opens with a general survey of the Ethiosemitic language group, which is followed by descriptions of individual Ethiosemitic languages: Classical Ethiopic (Ger'ez), Tigre, Tigrinya, Amharic, Argobba, Harari, Zay, Gafat and Chaha. Each description follows the typologically-oriented template implemented throughout the Languages of the World series. A set of maps illustrating the ancient and modern geographic distribution of the Ethiosemitic languages is appended to the volume.
