Bulgaria's independence from Byzantine rule was proclaimed in 1186. The next couple of decades saw a massive effort to rebuild the Bulgarian state and make it a major power in Eastern Europe and an important geopolitical factor. Behind this process was Kaloyan, King of Bulgaria between 1197 and 1207. A lot has been said about Kaloyan but equally much seems to have been held back. We have not yet given him the credit he deserves for having been "the most European" ruler of medieval Bulgaria, an epitome of the Bulgarian intellect and spirit, character and mentality, will and potential.
