Kerzhenets land was the center of the Old Belief. After the schism of the 1660s within the Russian Orthodox Church, the densely forested shores of the Kerzhenets river became the refuge for many Old Believers. Kerzhenets sketes remained numerous into the 19th century. The edition is based on archive and museum material, and also personal memoirs.
