Jozef Feldman (1899-1946) was a historian of modern and contemporary history, a professor at the Jagiellonian University, and the son of the literary critic and publicist Wilhelm Feldman and the translator Maria nee Kleinman. He completed his doctorate under the supervision of Wladyslaw Konopczynski. During the German occupation, due to his Jewish origins, he hid under the assumed name Jozef Sokolowski. He wrote foundational works on the 18th century, including Poland in the Great Northern War 1704-1709 (1925), Poland and the Eastern Question 1709-1714 (1926), and At the Turn of Polish-French Relations 1774-1787. Vergennes and Poland (1935). In the 1930s, he abandoned the Enlightenment to focus on Polish-German relations in the 19th century. The book that gained the greatest recognition was Bismarck and Poland (1938).
