Johann Georg Pinzel (? — autumn 1762) is the most prominent sculptor of the Rococo era in Ukraine. Most of his artistic heritage was destroyed in Soviet times, and even what has survived is impressive. In particular, sculptures adorning the most beautiful Ukrainian town hall in Buchach, Ternopil Oblast, and St. George's Cathedral in Lviv. Pinzel's original expressive style was far ahead of the development of contemporary art and became a world sensation in the 20th century. Meanwhile, the master's biography is a complete mystery. It is not known when and where he was born, what his real surname was, and from whom he learned his trade, why he came to the then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
