The monograph represents data on Jewish population in Daugavpils covering such issues as Jewish organizations, education, religion and charity, political parties and sport. Jews came to Daugavpils in the second half of the XVIIIth century. The laws which prohibited the Jews to settle in the countryside and permitted them to live only within "the boundaries of settlement" (including Daugavpils) promoted further influx of the Jews into the town. In the XIXth century the Jews made a great contribution to the development of the area.
