The monograph presents a mosaic of Jan Langos's activities since the 1980s, when he was involved in non-conformist groups, especially in the creation of cultural-civic samizdat and in the Movement for Civic Freedom. The author tries to present Jan Langos as indifferent a man and citizen as possible, with a sharply critical stance on burning social and moral issues such as environmental devastation, anti-Semitism, the Charter 77 movement, and the activities of the underground church. He reflected on these and other topics very openly and insightfully in his samizdat works as well as in informal discussions. Langos's civic activities and ideas continuously found application in the founding of the VPN [Public Against Violence] party and later especially in dealing with the questions of how to deal with the representatives of the communist power, the nomenclature of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSC) and its repressive component, such as the StB and its secret collaborators, after the change of the regime.
